Recent advances and challenges in the design of Li–air batteries oriented solid‐state electrolytes

Solid-state Li–air batteries with ultrahigh energy density and safety are promising for long-range electric vehicles special electronics. However, the challenging issues of developing battery-oriented solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) high ionic conductivity, interfacial compatibility, stability to boost reversibility, increase stable triple-phase boundaries, protect Li anode in an open system substantially impede their applications. Herein, we systematically summarize recent progress achieved terms SSEs batteries, describe detail basic characteristics SSE|air cathode interfaces SSE|Li interfaces. First, major ionic/electronic chemical/electrochemical/thermal stability, mechanical strength, compatibility briefly introduced according three types SSEs: inorganic, organic, hybrid SSEs. Second, key strategies integrating catalytic sites, porous structures, electronic conductors enhance boundaries at improving Coulombic efficiency described detail. Moreover, protection metal from H2O, CO2, O2, redox mediators ensure is elaborately overviewed. Finally, future opportunities perspectives on important topics three-dimensional structural integration, external field assistance, operando characterizations proposed advanced batteries.
